Chapter 75
Overview
Despite the sabotage, Katarina and Heath finish the short dance in first place, but Katarina's injured foot leaves the free skate in immediate jeopardy. Their questioning by officials deepens the sense that they are unprotected and may have been targeted through their hotel room rather than at the venue. The chapter ends by escalating the threat again when Katarina and Heath return to find their room opened and a body-shaped shadow on the bed.
Summary
Katarina gets through the short dance through adrenaline, anger, and ibuprofen despite the hidden sharp object that punctured her foot. By the end of the night, Katarina and Heath are in first place, two points ahead of the Russians, but Katarina's foot is badly swollen and painful enough that Heath tries to help with prescription painkillers he left at the hotel.
Before they can return, event officials question Katarina and Heath about the sabotage. The officials press them about why Katarina did not inspect her skate, why the bloody funeral roses were not reported earlier, and whether their bags were ever left unattended, making Katarina feel as though blame is being shifted onto them instead of the attacker.
Katarina and Heath review the only possible opening for the sabotage. Their equipment was never out of sight except for ten minutes when Katarina showered and Heath got food, and Heath insists he locked the room. That leads Katarina to conclude that whoever tampered with the skate likely had access to their hotel room or bribed staff, and Katarina suspects the Kipriyanov family's mob ties could have made that possible even if proving it would be difficult.
The officials promise a thorough investigation, but that does little to help Katarina with the free skate less than a day away and her foot full of puncture wounds. Because the hotel no longer feels safe but they have nowhere else to stay, Heath carries all the bags and supports Katarina as they slowly make their way back through the eerily empty, flickering hotel.
When they reach their room, Katarina notices the door is already ajar even though they had locked it before leaving. Ignoring Heath's warning, Katarina pushes inside and tries the light, but the bulb is still burnt out. In the dim hallway glow, Katarina sees the traces of their damaged room and then notices a dark, motionless shape on the bed, outlined like a body.
