Chapter 84
Overview
The triumph of Katarina and Heath's performance is instantly shattered when Heath collapses on the ice and coughs blood. The chapter shifts the story from romantic and competitive culmination to medical crisis, forcing Katarina to confront how much she has left unsaid and how close she may be to losing him. What should have been a victory becomes a moment of fear, regret, and suspended outcome.
Summary
Immediately after their free dance, Heath drops to his knees on the ice in a moment that Katarina experiences as a terrible inversion of his proposal years earlier. Instead of celebrating what Katarina believes was a winning performance, Heath collapses and coughs blood onto Katarina's costume as she holds him.
Medics, officials, and media rush toward them, turning the end of the program into chaos. Even as people surround them, Heath keeps looking at Katarina, and Katarina clings to him while others try to pull her away.
As the emergency unfolds, Katarina refuses to accept that this might be the end. She is overwhelmed by regret over everything she has never told Heath, including that she loved him even when she hated him and that she could never erase the marks of their shared life from their old house. The chapter ends with Katarina insisting, inwardly, that their story cannot end this way.
