Katarina remembers the Los Angeles photo shoot with Garrett as cold, awkward, and unglamorous, but the finished billboard presents it as intensely sexual and intimate. When Heath sees the ad on the day of the World Championships final, he shuts down and walks away. Although Katarina knows she hid the job from him, Bella urges Katarina not to apologize, and Katarina briefly chooses pride over placating Heath.

By the time the team shuttle reaches the M-Wave Arena in Nagano, Heath is still refusing to speak. The pair, about to skate their first World Championships final, go through their usual pre-performance routine separately, which immediately disrupts their focus and connection. During warm-up Heath will not take Katarina's hand, does his own makeup badly, and keeps his distance while Sheila Lin and the other coaches watch the tension grow.

When Sheila calls them over shortly before they skate, Heath leaves Katarina to face their coach alone. Katarina starts to explain that Heath is angry, but Sheila cuts her off and tells her to fix it because performance matters more than pride. Accepting that their medal chances are at stake, Katarina goes backstage intending to say whatever is necessary to get Heath through the free dance.

Garrett intercepts Katarina first, says Bella told him about the billboard, and offers to reassure Heath that nothing happened between them. Katarina refuses the help, but when Heath sees Garrett touch her shoulder, his jealousy flares even further. In the argument that follows, Katarina finally reveals that Lee spent her inheritance and that the photo shoot money paid for the rest of their season, meaning Garrett's connection helped keep them at the Academy and get them to Worlds at all.

Heath does not focus on the financial sacrifice or the secret's reason; instead, he demands to know whether Katarina is attracted to Garrett. Katarina says Garrett is attractive and insists trust should matter more, while Heath accuses her of lying and becoming a different person around the Academy crowd. As their names are announced and they realize they have missed their solo warm-up, Katarina reaches for Heath and reminds him they have come this far together. Heath finally takes her hand, but his reply exposes the deeper fracture in their partnership: this is not their shared dream anymore, but hers.
