Chapter Seventy
Contains spoilersOverview
Ash and Jane, aided by a hacker contact of Jane’s, track down the real identity behind the Bar Amelie troll “Jennifer Smith”: Amanda Law. At Amanda’s Tooting flat, they meet her son Sam and discover that Amanda vanished four years earlier after contact with a white-haired man who matches Nick Radcliffe. Ash and Jane reveal to Sam that Nick is likely his father, Damian Law, long presumed dead, and that Nick may be linked to the disappearance of Tara and possibly Amanda. Sam is devastated but agrees to be contacted when they move to confront Nick.
Summary
Jane messages Ash that her hacker contact traced the fake “Jennifer Smith” reviews about Bar Amelie to a real woman: Amanda Law, once a well-known interior designer who went bankrupt. Jane shares Amanda’s background, address in Tooting, and family details, and proposes they visit that evening. Ash, unnerved by recent revelations about Nick, meets Jane after work, and they go to Amanda’s flat.
At the address, a male voice answers the intercom, and a young man, Sam, Amanda’s son, lets them in. Sam closely resembles Nick Radcliffe in build and coloring. Inside the modest but well-decorated flat, Sam confirms Amanda is not there and explains she disappeared about four years ago after increasingly erratic behavior. He recounts that Amanda messaged her sons to say she was leaving London for a hippie retreat in the Algarve with a man, then ceased all contact. Concerned, Sam and his brother filed a missing person report.
Sam reveals the police told them that, about a year before Amanda’s disappearance, another woman visited Amanda’s flat for 24 hours and then vanished; neighbors had seen a male guest around that time. Ash and Jane recognize this as aligning with Tara’s disappearance. Sam adds that his father, Damian Law, died in a diving accident in the Philippines when Sam was young, leaving debts that ruined Amanda’s business.
Ash shows Sam photos of Nick from LinkedIn, his defunct coaching page, and a recent family photo. Sam cycles through shock and anger as Ash lays out that Nick has infiltrated Nina’s life under false pretenses, is married to Martha with a young child, previously married to Tara (now missing) and Laura (with two abandoned daughters), and is suspected of paying someone to kill Ash’s father. Ash then tells Sam she believes Nick is his father. Sam struggles to reconcile the images, noting the hair color, but concedes the resemblance and the age.
Jane suggests Damian could have faked his death in the Philippines, a known possibility, and that he may be the white-haired mid-fifties man neighbors saw with Amanda four years ago. Sam confirms the neighbors’ description matches Nick. Overwhelmed, Sam runs to the bathroom and vomits; Ash and Jane wait, fearing that Amanda may be dead and suspecting Nick’s involvement.
When Sam returns, he asks where his father is. Jane explains Nick fled about a week earlier after Martha discovered his connection to Nina, but that they have a plan in motion. Sam says he and his brother want to see their father. Jane collects his number and promises to tell him what to do next.
