Chapter Sixty-Three
Contains spoilersOverview
Nina returns home to find Nick missing and unresponsive, and she and Ash review Ring camera footage showing a distressed unknown woman visiting before Nick left with bags. Ash fully reveals her investigation into Nick’s double life, including meeting Emma Greenlaw, and Nina believes her. Mother and daughter reconcile, Nina apologizes for not listening and prioritizes Ash, and they agree to go to Enderford together the next morning to speak to Martha. Ash also admits she has been working with Jane Trevally, whom Nina surprisingly accepts.
Summary
Nina calls out for Ash, asking if Ash has seen Nick, who had said he would be home all day but is now missing and not answering his phone. Concerned, Ash suggests checking the Ring app to see when Nick left and with what. They sit together in the kitchen and review the footage.
The video shows routine deliveries, then a new clip at around 10:30 a.m. of a petite, anxious-looking woman with thick curly blond hair and wide blue eyes arriving, ringing the bell, peering in, waiting, leaving, and then driving away after two minutes. Shortly afterward, a midday clip shows Nick leaving quickly with a rucksack and a doctor’s bag, wearing a coat and wool hat, and not looking back.
Nina is confused by what they saw. Ash asks Nina to trust her and then recounts everything she has discovered: the pacifier clip in Nick’s pocket, her visit to Martha’s shop, and her meeting with Emma Greenlaw, who connected Nick to a pattern of manipulation and a missing woman. Nina is shocked and curses herself for letting Nick into their lives.
Ash asks for confirmation that Nina believes her, and Nina does, saying she would never have let Nick exploit her financially and that she had not been deeply invested in him. Nina acknowledges Nick’s manipulative skill but insists her priority is Ash and her brother, apologizing for making Ash feel unsafe and for not listening.
Ash then reveals she has not been working alone and has been getting help from Jane Trevally. Nina, who had previously dismissed Jane as “Mad Jane,” listens as Ash explains why she involved Jane due to Nick’s lies about knowing Ash’s father. Nina embraces Ash, admits she has been self-absorbed to avoid her grief, and says she does not blame Ash.
Ash asks Nina to come with her to Enderford the next morning to see Martha. Nina agrees, promising to cancel her meetings and go first thing. The chapter ends on a lighter note as Nina asks what Jane looks like now, joking about whether she is still attractive.
