Chapter Thirty-One: Four Years Earlier
Contains spoilersOverview
Four years earlier, Jonathan (posing as a reappeared Damian) stayed on Amanda’s sofa while plotting to free himself from Tara and secure money. He feigned a heart condition, hinted at a new business venture, and stole a spare key from Amanda. He then returned to Tara’s empty house to access finances but was confronted by Tara’s daughter, Emma, who declared the relationship over and threatened police involvement if anything happened to Tara.
Summary
Jonathan noticed a bruise on Amanda’s cheek that matched where he had restrained her days earlier, briefly feeling guilt before dismissing it. He told Amanda he had a hospital appointment for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and a meeting about investing in a Mayfair wine bar, implying he needed to raise more funds. He maintained a carefully sympathetic persona, referencing an abusive, deceased father, and accepted her offer of coffee, noting he already had her trust and a spare key.
After leaving, Jonathan ate breakfast on Tooting High Street and reflected on his plan to move in with Martha soon, but first to “deal with” Tara. He visited a pawnshop to price Tara’s ring, declined a £300 offer, and traveled to Reading, where he remotely disabled Tara’s Ring app before entering the house. He ruminated on transferring payment for his Tesla to a credit card in Tara’s name, planning to disappear before statements arrived.
Inside, Jonathan searched Tara’s laptop and bank account, discovering that she had changed passwords and removed the filing cabinet key, which enraged him. He composed himself as Emma unexpectedly arrived, claiming Tara had seen a Ring alert. Jonathan pretended he was only retrieving his raincoat, but Emma made clear she was there to monitor the house.
Emma asserted that the house was in Tara’s name and that Jonathan had no legal right to be there. Jonathan tried to manipulate Emma, suggesting she was jealous of his bond with Tara and presenting himself as trustworthy despite a traumatic past. Emma pushed back, calling him a psychopath and detailing years of worry for her mother’s wellbeing.
Emma then revealed she had identified Jonathan to a neighbor via a community app after recognizing him in footage related to an earlier incident, and said Tara believed he was responsible despite what he told police. She declared Tara was done with him. Jonathan, while seething internally, kept a calm facade, claimed he had always wanted acceptance, and headed for the door.
At the threshold, Emma warned that if anything bad happened to Tara, she would immediately go to the police. Jonathan met her gaze, nodded once, took the Tesla key from the hall, and left.
