Chapter Eleven
Contains spoilersOverview
After Nick spends an entire weekend at Nina’s house, Nina and Ash discuss Nina’s unexpected feelings and the possibility of a future with Nick. Ash is conflicted—supportive yet suspicious—probing Nick’s background and finances while noting red flags. Later at work, Ash confides in Marcelline about Nick and worries he might be after Nina’s money. A small detail unsettles Ash further when she notices Marcelline has an identical pink box to the one Nick used to send Paddy’s Zippo.
Summary
On Monday morning, Nina prepares breakfast, still buoyed by messages from Nick, who has just left after staying the whole weekend. Ash senses the lingering intimacy in the house and asks Nina if she had a nice weekend, prompting a careful conversation about Nina’s feelings and grief. Nina admits she is still in pain but describes feeling as if she has a “new heart” alongside her grieving one, allowing room for new love.
Ash asks if the relationship will continue and whether Nina wants that. Nina says she does, sharing that Nick mentioned a possible weekend in Lille but is busy and hard to pin down. Ash experiences a flash of anger at how quickly Nina broke her year of mourning and questions Nick’s situation, especially when Nina explains Nick now lives in Tooting after giving up a Pimlico flat due to financial issues at his wine bar.
Concerned about motives, Ash presses for more background. Nina says Nick has never been married, was once engaged, and has no children. When Nina reveals that Nick’s former fiancée died, Ash’s suspicion briefly softens, seeing a shared grief between Nina and Nick.
Nina heads out, offering to bring Ash dinner from the restaurant later, echoing a habit Paddy had. Afterward, Ash goes to work at the village shop, where Marcelline is opening up on a cold morning. Ash tells Marcelline—confidentially—that Nina has a boyfriend and sketches Nick’s history, including the condolence card, the returned Zippo in a pink box, his co-owned Mayfair wine bar, and the dead fiancée. Marcelline reacts positively to Nick’s photo and reassures Ash.
Ash admits she is happy for Nina but worried Nick may be attracted by Nina’s wealth, given his current financial troubles. As they talk, Ash notices a pink box on Marcelline’s desk that looks identical to the one Nick used for the Zippo. Marcelline thinks her box once held soaps and kept it because it was pretty. The match gives Ash pause, though she says nothing.
