Ash searches for Jane Trevally on social media, finding a minimally public Facebook and a private Instagram, and sends a detailed message explaining Paddy’s death and asking to talk. Jane replies almost immediately, expressing shock and grief, and proposes meeting. Two days later, Ash travels nervously to King’s Cross—her first time back in London since leaving her job—and meets Jane for brunch in a busy new development.

Jane greets Ash warmly, saying she can see Paddy in Ash’s face, and they settle in. Jane, posh and striking with red hair, expresses sympathy and recalls how horrific the incident sounded from news coverage. Ash describes the persistent trauma of imagining Paddy’s final moments. Jane confides that Paddy was the love of her life and admits she behaved badly when young, while insisting Paddy remained kind.

When Ash asks what Paddy was like, Jane describes him as steady and grounded, and herself as the one who made things complicated. Ash then raises Nick Radcliffe, a man who recently entered their lives claiming to have known Paddy and who sent a copper Zippo lighter. Ash shows Jane a screenshot of Nick’s now-deleted LinkedIn and produces the Zippo at the table.

Jane examines the lighter and states decisively that it was not Paddy’s. She explains Paddy never owned a proper lighter, instead cadging lights or carrying matchbooks and unreliable Bics. Jane also notes the Zippo looks too new. Ash suggests there may be an innocent mix-up but admits the whole situation feels off, especially with Nick’s abrupt appearance and inconsistencies.

Leaning in, Jane offers to have “people” run checks on Nick through various systems, citing her wealthy, cautious family and ex-husbands. Ash agrees and shares what she knows: Nick’s name, that he co-owns a wine bar, the deleted LinkedIn, his age (55), residence in Tooting, mention of a dead fiancée, no kids, and items found in his coat—a baby pacifier clip and a dog poo bag—despite him never mentioning a baby or a dog. Jane tells Ash to leave it with her.

Jane then brings out photos of young Paddy, and Ash eagerly shifts her focus from suspicion about Nick to seeing images of her father from earlier years.
