Chapter Seventy-Four
Contains spoilersOverview
Martha drove with Alistair (Nick/Jonathan) toward Bangate, outwardly loving and compliant while secretly coordinating with Nina. She reflected on how she had been manipulated over four years and steeled herself for a planned confrontation minutes away. A covert text from Nina confirmed timing. Al briefly stopped in a lay-by, alarming Martha, but he returned and the drive continued with mutual reassurances.
Summary
Martha rode in the passenger seat as Alistair drove toward Bangate, noticing how relaxed and happy he looked and responding to his affectionate words. Internally, Martha’s anxiety mounted as they neared the coast, aware that a decisive moment was approaching in about twenty minutes.
She reflected on her previously stable life and how Alistair had entered it without scrutiny, leading to her first serious mistake. Martha questioned how she had ignored obvious inconsistencies in Alistair’s supposed career and behavior, and why she still craved his love.
Comparing herself to other victims, Martha acknowledged that many women had been manipulated by Alistair and believed she might have received a less exploitative version of him until recently. She contrasted herself with Nina Swann, whom she viewed as strong and uncompromising.
Her phone buzzed with a coded message from Nina (saved as “school”) reading, “All ready. ETA?” Martha replied “Eight minutes,” then hid her phone from Alistair.
Alistair unexpectedly pulled into a lay-by, saying he needed to urinate, which frightened Martha because he never relieved himself outdoors. She worried he might be attempting to escape or that he had sensed the trap, but he returned moments later, smiling.
When Alistair asked if she was okay, Martha masked her adrenaline and said she was excited about their plan. Alistair responded warmly, and they continued toward Bangate, both outwardly aligned while Martha prepared for the imminent confrontation arranged with Nina.
