She rifles through his pockets and finds a tissue, a fifty-pence piece, and a ballpoint pen. She also discovers a plastic circle with a cartoon ladybird attached to a blue nylon strap with a clasp; she photographs it before returning it to his pocket. In the other pocket she finds a dog poo bag, which surprises her and makes her wonder who cares for Nick's dog when he visits Nina.

Nick returns unexpectedly, startling Ash, and explains that Nina sent him to fetch crisps. As Nick retrieves the crisps from the cupboard, Ash asks whether he met Paddy's former girlfriend during the 1990s when he worked with Paddy. Nick hesitates and then says no, suggesting Paddy likely had several girlfriends due to his personality.

Ash corrects him, stating Paddy only had two girlfriends—Jane first, and then Nina, with a messy overlap between them. Nick maintains that Paddy never mentioned the first girlfriend to him. Ash does not voice her knowledge that Jane was highly present in Paddy's life at the time. Nick further downplays his connection, saying he worked with Paddy only a few months and left because he could not handle it, whereas Paddy could. He then leaves with the crisps, smiling uncertainly.

The encounter intensifies Ash's suspicion that Nick is concealing aspects of his life, including possible ties to a child and a dog, and perhaps minimizing or misrepresenting his past with Paddy and Jane.
