Chapter Twenty
Contains spoilersOverview
Ash presses Nina about a gold ring and Nina confirms it belonged to Nick’s deceased fiancée, avoiding deeper questions. Over a quiet Friday night of ordering pizza and opening wine, Nina reveals Nick will visit the next evening and take her to a high-end restaurant. Ash voices suspicions about Nick’s finances and motives, while Nina defends Nick’s wealth and character. The conversation ends with Ash reflecting on her fascination with Jane, Paddy’s ex, drawing a parallel to her own feelings of being young, lost, and troubled.
Summary
At home a few days after finding a ring, Ash asks Nina what Nick said about it. Nina, distracted by ordering pizza, says the ring is the one Nick bought for his wedding to his deceased fiancée, adding that she did not ask why he had it with him because she considered it none of her business.
Ash challenges that it is somewhat their business, but Nina deflects and hands Ash the phone to choose a vegan pizza. Ash has declined a weekend trip to Brighton with Ella due to discomfort with Ella’s flatmates, opting instead to spend Friday evening with Nina.
As they wait for delivery, Ash opens a bottle of sparkling wine and asks when Nina will see Nick again. Nina says Nick is likely coming over the next night and plans to take her to a new restaurant by chef Luc Martin, whom Paddy had admired. Ash reacts coolly and questions the potential cost, hoping Nick will pay.
When Ash warns Nina not to pay for Nick’s dinner and suggests caution about his motives, Nina laughs off the idea. Nina insists Nick is wealthy, explaining he is temporarily living in Tooting, may have inherited or borrowed the flat, sold a Pimlico house to release capital for business investments, owns land for a future country club, and holds shares in various companies. Nina says she appreciates that Nick is comfortable in a modest flat and not pretentious.
Ash asks whether Nick shared anything new about Paddy, and Nina says no—only predictable memories like Paddy’s smoking, swearing, and food obsession. Ash then asks if Nick ever met Jane, Paddy’s ex from before Nina; Nina says not that he mentioned.
The scene closes with Ash’s internal fixation on Jane—her dramatic history and singular photo in Paddy’s mementos—casting Jane as young, lost, and troubled, a description Ash silently applies to herself.
