122. A Debt Repaid
Overview
Kaladin locates Bridge Four survivors who have saved Gavinor. Taravangian, on a dull-witted day, secretly bargains with Odium to spare Kharbranth, surrendering Jezrien’s Honorblade and agreeing to spy on Urithiru. Adolin declines the Alethi throne, leading to Jasnah’s coronation. Moash accepts the Honorblade and a new name, Vyre. Shallan weds Adolin, receives a Ghostblood assignment, and Dalinar begins writing Oathbringer.
Summary
Kaladin, flying on Stormlight and Kharbranthian gemstones, follows directions to a refugee camp marked with Bridge Four’s symbol. There he reunites with Drehy and Skar, who reveal they have saved Elhokar’s young son, Gavinor. Kaladin affirms their creed to protect those who cannot protect themselves.
In Urithiru, a mentally dull Taravangian debates the faltering Diagram with Adrotagia, Dukar, and Mrall as the Everstorm arrives. A compelling voice draws him to open a window; Odium pulls him into a vision, praises the Diagram’s ingenuity, and reveals Renarin as a blind spot that disrupted plans. Taravangian reads a message from his smarter self, realizes Odium must avoid a forced contest of champions, and bargains: in exchange for service—and surrendering Jezrien’s Honorblade—Odium will spare Kharbranth and its native-born, plus spouses. Odium accepts and orders intelligence on Urithiru.
Shallan projects a living map as Dalinar and the coalition assess shifting control across Roshar; Iri expands while Azir hesitates. Dalinar raises Alethkar’s succession: Adolin confesses killing Sadeas and refuses the crown. Dalinar seeks a monarch who can inspire and negotiate; later, court gossip is silenced when Jasnah arrives wearing a crown, signaling her selection as queen.
In occupied Kholinar, Moash labors clearing rubble until Leshwi and other Fused arrive. They present Jezrien’s Honorblade, warning that accepting it will end “Moash.” Embracing a new identity, Vyre (“He Who Quiets”) takes in Stormlight and Lashed, joining the Fused in the sky.
On her wedding day, Shallan endures ceremony, centers herself with Veil and Radiant, and accepts joy. Navani brings her brothers—Balat, Wikim, and Jushu—as a surprise. A note from Mraize credits the reunion as payment and assigns a new task: locate and win over (or capture) an Unmade willing to defect. After the celebrations, Dalinar, tutored by Navani, practices reading and writing, pens a preface to his account, and titles his work “Oathbringer, My Glory and My Shame.”
