2. One Problem Solved
Contains spoilersOverview
Amid chaotic resettlement, Sadeas is discovered murdered, triggering suspicion and a near-clash between factions. Dalinar restores order and confirms an assassination, but refuses to celebrate, instead formalizing governance for Urithiru. He appoints Aladar and Sebarial to key posts, directs military training and exploration, and charges Renarin and Shallan to develop Radiant leadership. Dalinar publicly commits to unifying Roshar.
Summary
Adolin Kholin supervises the disordered influx of supplies and people into Urithiru, redirecting misplaced beer and wine and soothing disputes over labor. Injured and unable to spar, he throws himself into logistics while privately reeling from his own role in Torol Sadeas’s death. A runner summons him to a discovery in the tower’s corridors.
Dalinar arrives to find Bridge Four and Sadeas’s soldiers on the verge of fighting beside a corpse. He forces both sides back, then examines Sadeas: a knife driven through the eye, blood long dried, and no Shardblade in evidence. He orders the body removed to a side room and for Ialai to be notified, noting this will look like assassination and could be blamed on him.
In the examination room, Navani, Adolin, Renarin, Shallan, Kalami, Teft, Sigzil, Sebarial, and Palona gather. Palona bluntly calls Sadeas’s death a problem solved; others fear the political fallout. Dalinar admits Sadeas was an enemy but insists he was also a capable general they needed. To prevent further conflict, he leads the group away.
On a balcony above the storms, Dalinar warns that Urithiru must be a bastion as the Everstorm returns and Desolations loom. Kalami recaps lore of Voidbringers bent on annihilation. A distant inner prompting to “unite them” steels Dalinar’s resolve to provide order and a rallying point.
Dalinar assigns roles: Aladar is named Highprince of Information to establish law, policing, and clear jurisdictions; Sebarial becomes Highprince of Commerce to manage supplies and markets; Adolin must count and drill the armies, leveraging control of Soulcasters and food to suppress squabbling. Bridge Four will continue exploring Urithiru and report when their captain returns. Finally, Dalinar vows to unite Roshar and instructs Renarin and Shallan to practice their Radiant abilities and prepare to lead others, reassuring a hesitant Renarin.
