Teft returns to Urithiru, where his spren presses him about his oaths and then senses danger. Bridge Four’s barracks have been attacked: Eth is dead, Rock and Bisig are gravely wounded, and the Honorblade is stolen. The assailant wore a Bridge Four officer’s coat, implicating Teft’s earlier lapse.
Summary
Teft leads Bridge Four away from the Oathgate, forcing himself to function despite his ongoing struggles. A glowing, blue-white woman—Teft’s spren—appears and urges him to speak his next Words and to tell the others of what he has already sworn. Before Teft can argue, the spren senses danger ahead and commands him to run.
Teft sprints to the Bridge Four barracks and finds the common room in ruins, reeking of blood. Rock, Bisig, and Eth lie on the floor. Teft begins triage, stabilizing Rock, who suffers multiple knife wounds. Lopen and Peet check the others: Bisig lives but bears a Shardblade wound; Eth is dead. Teft realizes Eth had been carrying the Honorblade and concludes the attacker came for it.
Huio takes over care of Rock, while Peet urges that Renarin be found as Rock’s best chance. Lyn directs Laran to run to the guard post to use a spanreed to contact the Oathgate. As Bisig wakes, he describes a short Alethi man in a Bridge Four coat with lieutenant’s knots, who struck before being recognized.
Lopen glances at Teft, who understands: the disguise matches the officer’s coat he secretly sold weeks earlier. Overwhelmed by shame, Teft withdraws to the hallway as the team focuses on saving Rock and Bisig, with the Honorblade missing and the assailant at large.
