31. Demands of the Storm
Contains spoilersOverview
Kaladin reaches the parshmen-held city of Revolar, then reveals himself to escape a Fused as an unexpected highstorm approaches. Seeing humans penned outside, he returns to organize their shelter and confronts pursuing Fused within the tempest.
Denied mercy by the Stormfather, Kaladin nevertheless shields refugees by parting the winds with windspren and is later guided by the storm’s currents to Urithiru.
Summary
Kaladin arrives at the parshmen-controlled city of Revolar with Khen’s group, noting looting, a breached inner wall, and humans conspicuously absent from the streets. At a processing line, a scribe identifies a nearby Fused and suggests Kaladin’s status must be approved. As thunder signals an early highstorm, Kaladin seizes Khen’s gemstone pouch, reveals his Stormlight, and escapes upward, urging the parshmen to seek shelter.
Hovering above the city, Kaladin wrestles with Syl over moral ambiguity: the parshmen’s justified anger versus human wrongs, and his past oaths. He spots mass pens holding humans to the east and realizes the guards are unprepared for the coming storm. He descends, disarms parshman guards with his Shardblade, and commands them to help move the captives toward bunkers.
Two flying, red-eyed Fused arrive and pursue him. Kaladin plunges into the stormwall to disrupt them, then pleads with the Stormfather to spare those below. The Stormfather refuses, claiming a storm must be a storm. Kaladin returns to the ground to shepherd a huddled group toward shelter in deadly winds and debris.
Desperate, Kaladin thrusts out a hand; dozens of windspren bind to him, forming luminous “wings” that deflect the gale and carve a calm path. He holds the windbreak long enough for the group to reach a bunker, then releases it as another Fused lands. Exhausted, he lets the storm fling him away and stays ahead of the tempest with continuous Stormlight.
After an hour, the winds subtly press him south. At Syl’s urging—an indirect apology from the Stormfather—Kaladin follows the current for hours until the storm passes, depositing him on the rocky plateau facing Urithiru.
