In the familiar Aharietiam vision, Dalinar takes a vantage point and uses a bow to protect the teenaged Prime Aqasix Yanagawn of Azir. As a Radiant in Shardplate arrives and the defenders rally, the fighting ebbs and the shaken emperor wanders among the wounded.

Jezerezeh’Elin appears, proclaiming that the Voidbringers are defeated and that he will lead the charge to the Tranquiline Halls before departing. Afterward, Dalinar reveals himself to Yanagawn and explains that he instigated the vision and brought the emperor into it. They survey the corpse-littered field, noting the varied dead and strange remnants, while Dalinar tries to use the horror to frame the stakes.

Yanagawn challenges Dalinar’s intentions, citing Azir’s history with the Sunmaker’s atrocities and fearing Alethi ambition. Dalinar insists he is not his ancestor, notes he surrendered his Shardblade, and claims age has taught him the consequences of violence. The conversation cools as they confront the devastation together.

Lift suddenly appears inside the vision, to the Stormfather’s shock, greets Yanagawn, and bluntly warns him not to trust Dalinar. She takes the emperor by the arm, and both vanish. The Stormfather, calling Lift tainted by the Nightwatcher and an affront to his will, refuses further discussion. Dalinar remains alone until the vision ends, brooding over the field of the dead and the implications.
