After fleeing the Oathgate platform, Veil meets Vathah and sends him to report to the king. Restless and seeking action, she resumes distributing her remaining food in the market and visits Grund’s ruined shop. Grund acts strangely eager and desperate, and Pattern suggests he is lying. Sensing trouble, Veil Lightweaves a new face, circles back, and eavesdrops.

Inside, thugs from the Grips eat the food while Grund lies beaten. Veil charges, but one smashes Grund’s head and they escape deeper into the building. Veil cannot pursue without abandoning the wounded child. As she tries to bandage him, Grund accuses her of drawing attention with her public charity. He reveals the Grips forced urchins to wait for her and punished them when they failed. He dies blaming her.

Reeling, Shallan rushes to Muri, the seamstress and mother she has been helping. Muri is packing to flee, explaining that the Grips have been watching and arguing over targets. They have been taking the food and coercing the needy to wait for Veil’s arrivals. Angry and afraid, Muri leaves with her children. Shallan remains alone, numb and guilt-stricken, realizing her oblivious aid has empowered predators and harmed those she meant to help.
