24. Men of Blood and Sorrow
Contains spoilersOverview
Dalinar welcomes King Taravangian and new Dustbringer Malata to Urithiru via the Veden Oathgate. As Dalinar’s memories of Evi resurface, Navani’s research indicates Old Magic boons and curses persist, and the Stormfather denies causing the change. Other monarchs refuse the call, Tezim threatens, and Dalinar reaffirms diplomacy despite pervasive suspicion of Alethi conquest.
Summary
Dalinar recalls early memories of his late wife, Evi, and wonders why his Nightwatcher curse seems to be changing. On Urithiru’s plateau, the Veden Oathgate activates. Dalinar greets King Taravangian, Adrotagia, and Malata of Jah Keved, introduced as a new Radiant—a Releaser (Dustbringer)—who opened the gate.
Riding the ancient lift, Taravangian marvels at Urithiru and confirms Vedenar remains secure despite a parshmen push. He speaks with melancholy about “men of blood and sorrow,” unsettling Dalinar. The group tours upper levels as Dalinar studies Malata and her quietly amused demeanor.
Navani welcomes the visitors. In private, she and Dalinar discuss his returning memories; her research shows Old Magic effects do not fade, and the Stormfather asserts the bond is not restoring them. Dalinar recalls little of his visit to the Valley, leaving the cause unresolved.
In the meeting hall, expectations for a coalition collapse: Taravangian is the only monarch to come. Navani reports evasions from Thaylenah and Azir, and reads a proclamation from the Tukari god-king Tezim, who claims divinity and demands submission. The leaders conclude they currently stand alone.
Taravangian assumes Alethi aggression and suggests targets, reflecting widespread suspicion of Dalinar’s motives. Dalinar insists on diplomacy and focusing on the Voidbringers, but privately considers whether seizing Oathgates might become necessary to unite Roshar. He steadies himself with his oath to unite, not divide, while Evi’s returning memory deepens his introspection.
