Summary
Dalinar, reeling from restored memories torn apart by the Nightwatcher, tours ruined Vedenar and struggles with guilt over Rathalas and Evi. Taravangian approaches with a half-shard, prompting uneasy talk about fabrials, “enslaved” spren, and the Sunmaker’s ruthless legacy. The philosophy and devastation worsen Dalinar’s turmoil.
Inspecting Veden troops briefly steadies him until veterans describe the civil war’s frenzy. Geved and others recount an irresistible battle-lust—the Thrill—that drove them past reason. Feeling the Thrill rekindle within, Dalinar flees the walls and streets, fighting the urge to lash out. Guard Rial offers a hidden canteen; Dalinar refuses and heads for the Oathgate.
At the Oathgate, Navani warns that curates demand an audience. A young Valathi curate publicly proclaims Dalinar a heretic and excommunicate. The Thrill surges, and Dalinar fears he will kill the man, so he bolts into the control chamber. Despite the Stormfather’s protests, Dalinar summons bright power as a makeshift key and moves only the building to Urithiru.
Arriving shaken, Dalinar feels the Stormfather withdraw his favor while the Thrill continues to gnaw at him. Seeking refuge, he clutches The Way of Kings, but it offers no comfort. Desperate, he ransacks Adolin’s chambers, finds a bottle of violet wine, and raises it toward his lips.
