13. Chaperone
Contains spoilersOverview
Shallan refines her Veil persona and deepens trust with Adolin, formally introducing Pattern and setting him as a comically strict “chaperone.” Amid food and teasing, she confronts personal trauma yet reaffirms their betrothal. They pivot to work, preparing to study Vedekar Perel’s murder report and political readings.
Summary
Shallan, relocated to Sebarial’s section of Urithiru, practices Lightweaving to perfect her Veil persona, reviewing sketches and testing voice and posture. A knock interrupts her; Adolin arrives with food and books, catching her in a nightgown. After flustered banter about propriety, Shallan dresses and invites him in.
Eating together, Shallan wrestles with the lingering pain of admitting she killed her mother and later her father, but chooses to focus on the moment. She formally introduces Pattern to Adolin and demonstrates a small illusion of Adolin in Shardplate. They briefly discuss the value of secrecy regarding her order.
Shallan appoints Pattern as their chaperone; he takes this literally, loudly forbidding “No mating!” as they share food—including a comedic mishap with a spicy dish. The levity helps ease Adolin’s insecurity about their betrothal, and Shallan reassures him they will not ruin the relationship.
Adolin presents a notebook summarizing inquiries into the murder of Vedekar Perel and brings books on Makabaki politics for Shallan. After a kiss interrupted by Pattern’s vigilant chaperoning, they agree to review the investigation notes together, turning their evening toward the ongoing murder case.
