I-12. Rhythm of Withdrawal
Contains spoilersOverview
Venli lives as a controlled hermit-prophet in Marat, preaching “Passion” to former Thaylen slaves while the Fused restrict her from discussing listener heritage. Rine conscripts her onto a vast singer fleet guided by Odium’s storm, revealing many Fused remain unawakened and that they fight to win the world for singers before finally sleeping.
Summary
In Marat, Venli lives in a sparse cave, fashioned by the Fused into a hermit-prophet to impress local crowds—mostly former Thaylen slaves turned singers. She gives rehearsed speeches exalting “Passion,” but is forbidden to answer questions after previously discussing listener history. Venli suspects the Fused fear that heritage, and she quietly hides her connection to Dalinar’s earlier vision.
Outside her cave, a capricious Fused waits. Venli is abruptly seized and deposited on a ship’s deck, where the Fused acknowledges mistreatment only grudgingly. She is told she will sail with them and may wash aboard. Looking out, Venli sees a vast armada—hundreds of ships bearing thousands of singers—departing hidden coves.
Venli asks why such a fleet is needed if the Fused are so powerful. Rine first mocks her, then—on the Rhythm of Withdrawal—explains that many of the strongest Fused have not yet awakened and that, regardless, they will not fight alone. He declares the war is for the singers’ descendants; after victory and vengeance, the Fused will finally sleep. He orders Venli to prepare as red lightning rises in the west: they will sail swiftly, guided by Odium’s storm.
