6. Four Lifetimes
Contains spoilersOverview
Kaladin discovers Hearthstone’s people sheltering in Roshone’s manor and reunites with his parents, confessing his guilt over Tien. He notes injuries from storm, not battle, as Roshone’s captain moves to seize him as a deserter. Lirin shields Kaladin, and when Roshone appears, Kaladin floors him, reigniting their feud.
Summary
Escorted into Roshone’s manor, Kaladin finds familiar faces crowding the halls and kitchens. The townspeople look wary and fail to recognize him, whispering about his slave brands. Ignoring the guard’s prodding, Kaladin follows the sound of moans to a makeshift triage. There, he reunites with his father, Lirin, and his mother, Hesina. Overwhelmed, Kaladin apologizes for failing to save Tien; his parents reveal they were told Kaladin had died.
As Kaladin eats, the guard captain argues that Kaladin is a runaway slave and likely a deserter. Hesina offers comfort and a place at home, while Lirin protects Kaladin, insisting he will buy his writ and threatening to withhold surgical services if Roshone presses the matter. Kaladin examines the wounded and realizes the injuries are from the Everstorm’s destruction, not a battle with Voidbringers.
Syl flits about, delighted by the reunion and cryptically claiming she “remembers” through the winds, hinting at a broader connectedness and another distant, pure voice. Kaladin steadies himself, deciding not to be ruled by his darker moods.
Roshone arrives, older, gaunter, and bitter. He inspects Kaladin’s brands and sneers, asking if Kaladin struck a lighteyes. Kaladin answers yes—then punches Roshone cleanly to the floor, declaring the blow was for Moash, signaling old grievances are far from settled.
