Bela spends the evening watching a third "easy movie" with Daddo while Mommy is still out. Because the living room opens onto the kitchen and the front of the house, Bela carefully watches Daddo whenever he gets up, worried he might hear creaking from the stairs or get too close to where Other Mommy might be. Bela remembers that when she was younger, Other Mommy used to cover Bela's ears during scary movies, which makes Bela feel how much her feelings about Other Mommy have changed.

When Daddo thinks he hears Mommy come home, he and Bela go to the front of the house to check. At the dark dining-room table, Bela thinks she sees a figure and hears breathing, which frightens her because Other Mommy has never come downstairs before. Before Bela can confirm what she sensed, the front door suddenly opens and Mommy arrives, making Bela scream. With the lights on, the dining room appears empty.

Mommy comes in tired and slightly distracted, drops her purse, brushes past Daddo's attempt to kiss her, then settles into teasing banter with him and brings him a drink. She sends Bela upstairs to get ready for bed. As Bela climbs the stairs, she hears her parents whispering and kissing, and she wishes they could always feel close and happy like they used to. Bela is also relieved that they do not seem to realize someone else may be in the house, because Bela does not want Other Mommy speaking to them or asking them the same unsettling question she always asks Bela.

Upstairs, Bela finds Other Mommy sitting on Bela's bed waiting for her. Mommy calls from downstairs before Bela answers, but Other Mommy remains focused and unsmiling. When the question comes again, Bela says no. Bela then runs into the bathroom, shuts the door, and makes enough noise with her bedtime routine to drown the question out.
