Despite Bela’s recent fall, Mommy and Daddo go ahead with their party and hire Kelvin to watch her upstairs. Bela listens as the early guests discuss the accident: Daddo insists Bela is fine, but Mommy remains disturbed by the strange, almost inhuman sound Bela made at the park. Because Bela is still afraid of the closet, she delays changing clothes until Kelvin arrives.

When Mommy brings Kelvin to Bela’s room, Kelvin opens the closet for her and finds only her clothes, which briefly undercuts Bela’s fear. Bela changes in the bathroom, but she stays uneasy because Other Mommy had appeared there before and now seems to be nowhere she can track. As Kelvin leads Bela downstairs, Bela repeats Other Mommy’s claim about carnations bringing people back to life, and Daddo turns it into a joke about reincarnation.

At the party, Daddo introduces Bela to Lois Anthony, a woman interested in the supernatural. Lois tells Bela that she may be a Sensitive, then touches Bela’s shoulder twice and tries to detect something unusual. Although Lois asks directly whether Bela sees ghosts and says Daddo suggested she might, Lois cannot sense any clear sign of psychic ability; even so, Lois tells Bela that anything she does see is natural, which leaves Bela unsettled rather than reassured.

As the house grows louder and more crowded, Bela notices adult tensions that deepen her unease. She sees Mommy standing closely with a man in the foyer and holding his hand while Daddo is elsewhere, reinforcing Bela’s awareness that the adults are hiding things from one another. Bela dances anyway, but she feels strange and distracted, especially as the stairs creak and Lois continues watching her from across the room.

During a guest’s ghost story, Marsha suddenly screams and says she has seen a huge figure on the far side of the living room. The other adults assume Marsha is too drunk or too high, but Marsha insists the figure was tall, dark blue, and hairy. Bela steps forward and corrects everyone: it was not a monster, but Other Mommy. By naming the figure in front of the adults, Bela reveals that the presence haunting her may now be visible to others as well.
