Chapter 27
Overview
Fleeing in the car after Frank Doherty’s death, Bela’s family realizes they cannot simply keep running from the entity because every temporary refuge may become unsafe. As the adults argue, Bela remembers Other Mommy’s earliest attempt to enter her heart and the implied threat behind being denied. The chapter ends with the family deciding to hide in Frank’s vacant house, a choice that shows both their desperation and their lack of better options.
Summary
Bela rides in the car with Daddo, Mommy, and Grandma Ruth as the family flees after Frank Doherty’s death. Everyone is shaken: Mommy keeps breaking into tears, Daddo admits they have not figured out what to do, and Ruth insists they must find somewhere safe. Their options feel exhausted because Bela’s house, Ruth’s house, and Amanda and Dan’s house all seem vulnerable to the same presence.
The adults argue over whether to keep moving or confront what is happening. Daddo considers hotels, but quickly realizes temporary escapes will only multiply and become unsustainable, especially if he cannot work. Ruth presses the point that the entity is following them and that they need someone who can handle it, while Mommy repeatedly insists that nobody understands what she saw in Bela’s room.
As the car moves through the dark, Bela remembers the first time Other Mommy spoke from the closet. In Bela’s recollection, Other Mommy introduced herself as a secret friend, asked to come out, and then asked to enter Bela’s heart so she could walk and talk like Bela. When Bela wondered what would happen to her own self, Other Mommy implied Bela would go where the entity comes from, making the request feel like a threat of replacement.
Bela also recalls that Other Mommy compared herself to Bela’s former cats, Pester and Milky, and described how a shut-out creature can grow sad, relentless, and eventually mean. This memory makes Bela connect Ruth’s earlier questions about whether Other Mommy had threatened anyone with the entity’s language about being denied entry. The flashback deepens the sense that Other Mommy’s desire to be let in may lead to harm when refused.
Finally, Mommy suggests they go to Frank’s house, explaining that the ambulance has already taken Frank’s body away and that she has a key. Daddo is appalled at first, but after pulling over to think in the darkness, he accepts the idea. He turns the car around, and the family heads back toward Frank’s house, choosing a dead man’s empty home as their next refuge.
