By the fire at Lake Michigan, Ursula tells Bela the truth she and Russ have hidden for years. Ursula says she was once married to Douglas Cain, lived a reckless, unhappy life, and cheated on Douglas repeatedly. During that period, Ursula met Russ at a bakery, began an affair with him, and later became pregnant while still sleeping with both men.

Ursula explains that she and Russ hoped the baby was Russ's, but a paternity test proved otherwise: Douglas Cain was Bela's biological father. Before Ursula could fully resolve the situation, Douglas discovered the affair by following Ursula to Russ's apartment. After that, Douglas wanted nothing to do with Ursula, the marriage, or the baby. Russ then chose to raise Bela as his own, becoming the man Bela knows as Daddo.

Ursula admits she is telling Bela this now because Lois advised that destroying Bela's innocence might weaken Other Mommy's hold on her. After Ursula finishes, Bela is overwhelmed and rises without thinking. Russ, devastated, asks Lois whether Bela's innocence has now been revoked, and Lois says yes. Russ immediately says the talking must stop.

Bela walks and then runs down the beach, crying as Lois, Ursula, and Russ chase after her. Bela feels betrayed by all three adults and rejects their comfort when they catch her. While they kneel around her in the dark, grieving and insisting the truth is real, Bela hears the dog-like crawling presence from the beach and knows Other Mommy is still there.

Although Bela can sense and even see Other Mommy approaching on all fours, she decides not to tell the adults. Feeling lied to and hurt, Bela chooses to lie back. She tells Ursula, Russ, and Lois that Other Mommy is gone forever and that the plan worked, while inwardly knowing this is false.
