Chapter 21
Overview
At Grandma Ruth’s house, Bela overhears Ursula and Russ admit that they cannot return home after Ursula’s sighting in Bela’s bedroom. Grandma Ruth intervenes, argues that the family needs an exorcist, and forces them to confront Bela directly instead of hiding the truth. Bela’s answers reveal that Other Mommy has visited her many times, speaks to her, and asks to enter her heart, making the danger feel deeper and more personal than the adults realized.
Summary
The next morning at Grandma Ruth’s house, Bela lies awake on the living-room cushions and overhears Mommy and Daddo talking in the kitchen. Ursula says they cannot go back to their house because what she saw on Bela’s bed has changed reality for their family. Russ tries to respond practically by suggesting they move, sell the house, or even leave on a road trip, but Ursula is so shaken that she says the house should be burned down and refuses the idea of returning for anything.
As the discussion continues, Russ worries about immediate consequences, including money, work, and Bela’s school starting soon. He suggests waiting a couple of days before deciding everything and offers to go back to the house in daylight with Mark to retrieve needed items like his computer. Ursula rejects that too, showing that fear has overtaken any normal plan for handling the situation.
Grandma Ruth then reveals that she has been listening. She bluntly tells them that if what they are describing is real, they need an exorcist to get it out of the house and out of their lives. She also points out that Bela is listening and that the adults’ fear is making it obvious they cannot protect her, which raises the stakes from private panic to a family crisis that must be faced directly.
Grandma Ruth calls Bela to the couch and questions her despite Mommy’s objections. Bela admits that she has seen the figure more than once, possibly many times, and reveals that it talks to her. Bela explains that the figure told her to call it Other Mommy and that it repeatedly asks whether it can go into Bela’s heart.
These answers shock Ursula and Russ because they confirm the haunting has been ongoing and intimate, not a single isolated sighting. Grandma Ruth then tests a rational explanation by asking whether it could have been an intruder or someone in costume, but she concludes that if the figure is not a person, the police cannot solve this. Her conclusion pushes the family toward seeking supernatural help instead of denial or ordinary authorities.
