At Evelyn’s house, the family briefly escapes its fear by drinking, dancing, and treating the stormy night like a party. Bela enjoys seeing Mommy and Daddo relaxed and brave again, even when Daddo drunkenly jokes about Other Mommy and says he would offer the entity a drink. The mood matters because it is the first real release after days of terror, but the adults’ heavy drinking also leaves Bela unprotected.

Later, Grandma Ruth and Evelyn talk privately in the kitchen. Ruth insists the family is facing something more than ordinary marital trouble, while Evelyn believes the problem still belongs to Mommy and Daddo to handle. Soon after, everyone goes upstairs. Mommy and Daddo fall asleep almost immediately in the yellow bedroom, and Grandma and Evelyn leave Bela there with instructions to wake an adult if necessary.

Bela wakes needing to use the bathroom, but neither parent can be roused. Alone in the large, dark house, Bela tries to gather courage by imagining Kelvin’s voice guiding her. Bela first checks the bedroom closet for something to use instead of walking into the hall, finds nothing, and finally ventures out alone. Bela reaches the bathroom, briefly mistakes a dark shape behind the shower curtain for Evelyn, then discovers no one is there.

While using the toilet, Bela suddenly realizes she seems to be sitting on someone else’s lap. Looking down, Bela sees other legs beneath her own, then falls and sees Other Mommy sitting against the wall with no face, holding its face in its hands. Evelyn arrives at the bathroom door, sees the entity, and screams. Grandma Ruth pulls Bela away as Other Mommy follows them into the hall, proving to both women that the haunting is physically real and no longer visible only to Bela.

The family scrambles from the yellow bedroom as Other Mommy stretches into the room above them. Evelyn, terrified and furious, orders them to leave and to take the thing with them. Daddo carries Bela downstairs and out to the car while Mommy, Daddo, and Ruth flee with Evelyn still screaming on the porch. As Mommy drives them away through the rain, Ruth worries they have left the entity in Evelyn’s house, but Mommy realizes the truth: the haunting goes wherever they go. By the end of the chapter, the family understands they have not failed to escape a haunted house; they themselves are what is haunted, and Bela feels that the entity is attached especially to her.
