Chapter 38
Overview
Brian, the outside specialist Russ called, arrives and assesses the house with a cold, practical attitude that frustrates Mommy but offers the family a new option. After insisting on inspecting the house alone and confirming that multiple people have truly seen the entity, Brian decides his first strategy is not direct confrontation but deception. The chapter marks a shift from desperate containment to an active plan to outwit the presence.
Summary
A large, stern man named Brian arrives as the outside help Russ called for. Mommy, Daddo, Bela, and the dogs stay together while giving Brian a tour of the house, including Bela’s bedroom, the closet, the bathroom, the parents’ room, and even the linen closets. The family’s fear is now so constant that nobody wants to separate, even in daylight.
In the backyard, Brian explains how he works. Brian says he refuses to approach cases through religion and will not argue about whether the presence is a ghost or a demon. Instead, Brian treats the haunting like a dangerous pest that has to be removed, which immediately clashes with Mommy’s urgency and emotional desperation.
When Mommy asks for a plan, Brian says it is too soon because he has only just heard the story and only now seen the house and family for himself. Brian asks to inspect the house alone, with the dogs brought outside. Mommy distrusts the idea and worries about letting a stranger move through the house unsupervised, but Daddo agrees because the family has run out of options.
While Brian searches inside with a flashlight, Bela and her parents watch from the yard. Mommy feels hopeless, and Daddo keeps insisting that bringing Brian in is at least an attempt to fight back. Bela notices Brian’s light pause in Bela’s bedroom, which recalls the previous night’s encounter with the false Kelvin and reinforces how vulnerable that room has become.
Brian eventually returns outside and asks for direct confirmation that the family truly saw the entity. Mommy reacts angrily to the question, but Daddo adds that several other people have also witnessed it. Satisfied, Brian says he knows what to do: Brian’s plan is to trick the entity, shifting the family from passive defense toward an active attempt to outmaneuver it.
