Bela, Daddo, and Grandma Ruth sit in a circle in Lois Anthony’s living room with several of Lois’s spiritualist friends. The group has brought crystals and other objects they consider tools for spiritual communication, and Lois explains that they will try to contact Other Mommy and tell her to leave Bela alone. The attempt immediately becomes tense because Lois’s friends are unsure what Other Mommy is and whether they are risking contact with something dangerous. Bela becomes upset by their arguing and admits that Bela does not know what Other Mommy is either.

Lois continues anyway, giving crystals to Bela, Daddo, and Grandma Ruth and leading the room in a silent, then spoken, communal message for Other Mommy to leave. As the group concentrates, Bela notices that Kyle reacts strongly, as if he is hearing or feeling something. While the others keep chanting, Kyle says that Other Mommy answered him. He then approaches Bela, whispers that Other Mommy wants Bela to know she gave Bela a present, and crouches by the candles.

Kyle suddenly blows out the candles, breaking the ritual and shocking the room. Lois and the others argue with him as the doorbell rings. Mommy arrives crying and tells Daddo that Frank Doherty is dead. When Daddo presses for details, Mommy says that Frank Doherty was in a closet, positioned as if he had slept there.

Grandma Ruth takes Bela away from the adult conversation, and Lois apologizes for the failed attempt and for bringing Kyle. Outside, Bela keeps thinking about Kyle’s message about a present and about Mommy’s description of Frank Doherty’s body in a closet. Bela realizes that the answer to whether Other Mommy could hurt someone may no longer be no. Bela breaks down crying as Grandma Ruth, Daddo, and Mommy all confront the possibility that Other Mommy may have harmed Frank Doherty.
