Chapter 48
Overview
Bela’s anger over the truth about her parentage explodes on the beach, and Russ’s attempt to explain the family secret only deepens Bela’s sense of betrayal. Bela then runs into Lake Michigan after seeing Other Mommy in the wind and water, revealing how dangerously drawn Bela remains to the haunting. The near-drowning breaks the fragile alliance with Lois when Ursula slaps her and Lois leaves, while Russ decides the family must return home even though he cannot tell whether Other Mommy is really gone.
Summary
On the morning after Ursula’s confession, Bela walks alone along the beach while Russ follows at a distance. Bela, hurt and furious, yells that Russ is not her father and tries to push him away. Russ asks to walk with her and explains how the secret began: Douglas Cain was dangerous, Russ stayed to help Ursula, and by the time Bela was born he and Ursula already loved her as their child. Russ says they kept delaying the truth because Bela was too young, then because there never seemed to be a right time, and finally because the haunting and Lois’s pressure forced the revelation.
Bela does not accept the explanation. Bela says she wants to go home and asks Russ what she is supposed to call him now, a question that shows how badly the secret has damaged Bela’s trust. Russ keeps trying to justify the family’s choices and says the beach trip may already have helped because there was no violent incident overnight, but Bela only feels trapped among adults who have lied to her.
When Russ continues talking, Bela turns toward the lake and screams. In the clouds and wind Bela thinks she sees Other Mommy swallowing the scream, and after shoving Russ away Bela runs into the cold water fully clothed. Under the surface Bela keeps screaming and sees Other Mommy’s hairy legs and three-toed feet on the rocky bottom. Bela does not want to come back up and briefly thinks Bela would rather be home with Other Mommy than with Bela’s family. Ursula, Russ, and Lois rush in, pull Bela out, and carry Bela back to shore.
Under the umbrella, Ursula and Russ dry Bela off and insist that they still love Bela and are still Bela’s parents. Lois asks whether anyone else saw something in the water, and Ursula, frightened and angry after nearly losing Bela, slaps Lois across the face. Lois quietly decides to rent a car and leave, saying she hopes the trip did some good and warning them to be careful. After Ursula walks off to compose herself, Russ tells Bela that everything feels shattered but says they are going home because the problem is no longer just a place but something inside their lives. Russ asks whether Bela thinks Lois was right and whether Other Mommy is gone, but Bela stays silent while still sensing the monster nearby.
