Chapter 41
Overview
While Bela pretends to sleep, Ursula and Russ finally move from defense to offense. Convinced that Other Mommy can be touched, they decide to attack it with knives the next time it appears, even as they acknowledge the risk that they could die. The chapter matters because it turns the family's fear into a deliberate plan and reaffirms Ursula and Russ as a united team fighting for Bela's survival.
Summary
Bela lies on the couch pretending to sleep while Ursula and Russ talk quietly in nearby chairs. A movie plays to cover their voices because they do not want Other Mommy to hear them, although Bela fears the entity hears everything anyway. In that tense privacy, Ursula tells Russ they must find a deeper courage than they have ever needed before, drawing strength from how fearless they once felt together in college.
Because Brian was able to touch Other Mommy, Ursula and Russ treat that as proof the creature can be physically confronted. That realization changes their approach from enduring the haunting to planning an attack. Russ asks how they can make sure they see the entity again, and both parents briefly glance at Bela, but Ursula immediately rejects the idea of deliberately using Bela to draw it out.
They then discuss practicalities. Russ suggests knives and even wonders about a gun, but Ursula points out that Other Mommy can look like other people, so they must get close enough to be certain of what they are striking. Both admit they are terrified, especially because Frank may already have been killed by the entity, and Ursula forces Russ to face the real possibility that they themselves could die. Russ reframes their situation as survival rather than ordinary parenting, and that gives them a harder, more determined clarity.
As the conversation continues, Ursula and Russ steady each other emotionally. They remind themselves that they are a team and that the family they once only imagined is real, which makes the fight worth taking on. Ursula struggles to forget the creature's appearance, and Russ tries to help by comparing it to a dangerous animal that can still be beaten. They cry together, then briefly laugh at themselves, and finally agree that no matter where or when Other Mommy appears next, they will attack it.
At the end of the chapter, both parents look down the hall, where Kami and Kamael are already facing the front door, suggesting danger could be near. Ursula and Russ settle on knives, kiss, and then turn back to Bela. They reveal that they know Bela has been awake, place their hands on Bela's shoulders, and include Bela in their vow: they are a team, always.
