Late at Amanda and Dan’s house, everyone except Bela has fallen asleep in the living room. Mommy is exhausted on the couch, Dan is asleep in a chair, Amanda is asleep near the baby’s crib, and Daddo still has not returned from the police station. Bela stays awake, frightened by a repeated sound that seems less like ordinary sleeping and more like someone taking a breath before speaking.

Trying to reassure herself, Bela listens closely to each sleeping adult and decides the sound does not match any of them. She uses Mommy’s phone to call Daddo, hoping he will return and tell everyone that the danger is over. He does not answer, but he texts back that everything is all right and that he is filing a report, which briefly reassures Bela and Mommy.

Even after that, Bela keeps hearing the same breath-like sound from the entrance to the living room. She hides under a blanket, then looks again, terrified that someone is present. Bela whispers into the dark and begs whatever may be there not to respond, showing how strongly she expects the threatening presence to be nearby.

The tension rises when Bela hears movement across the room and Dan suddenly wakes, turns toward the same entrance, and asks who is there. Amanda wakes as well, and the two adults try to identify the noise. Dan says he heard breathing, while Amanda suggests it may only have been her snoring, leaving the source uncertain but confirming that Bela is not the only one unsettled.

At that moment, Mommy’s phone lights up with a new text from Daddo saying that he is back and outside. Dan turns on the light at the entrance to the living room, and no one is there. He tries to dismiss the scare by blaming Amanda’s snoring, but everyone remains shaken, and Daddo’s knock on the door startles them all.
