Bela spends the morning in the den while Daddo works at his desk and she tries to finish a difficult puzzle. Their conversation is gentle and familiar: Bela says work is better than doing nothing, and Daddo talks about how exhausting some projects can be. When Bela admits she is afraid of giving speeches at school, Daddo encourages her to get over stage fright early because speaking up is part of adult life.

While Daddo takes another phone call, Bela becomes distracted by creaking overhead. Bela thinks about how Other Mommy has changed over time: first staying in the closet, then coming out, then talking, and now asking to enter Bela’s heart. Bela senses that Other Mommy is getting closer, and when Bela looks up, she seems to see an eye or a face in the ceiling.

Daddo notices Bela looks frightened, but he assumes the problem is the earlier conversation about speeches. He apologizes, tries to reassure Bela, and offers to watch a movie with her when he finishes working. The exchange briefly restores their closeness, especially when Daddo and Bela repeat that they are best friends.

As soon as Daddo is distracted by another phone call, Bela looks up and sees Other Mommy looking down at her. Afraid Daddo might see the figure, Bela runs upstairs to confront Other Mommy and protect Daddo. In Bela’s bedroom, Other Mommy is sitting on the edge of the bed. Before Bela can warn her away from Daddo, Other Mommy again asks, "Bela, can I go into your heart?" Bela refuses several times, even after Other Mommy insists that "friends give and take."

Other Mommy becomes upset, and Bela runs back downstairs without looking back. Finding Daddo off the phone, Bela urgently pushes him to start a movie right away. Bela’s eagerness is really an attempt to keep Daddo occupied and away from the threat upstairs, even though Daddo does not understand the reason.
