Chapter 9
Overview
In the aftermath of Bela's fall, Mommy and Daddo argue gently over whether Bela is truly all right, revealing Mommy's lingering panic and Daddo's effort to normalize the accident. They decide to take Bela to the doctor, but as they leave, Bela hears Other Mommy upstairs and wonders whether giving in would stop the entity's advance. The chapter ties a mundane injury to the growing supernatural pressure on Bela.
Summary
After Bela's fall at Chaps Park, Bela sits at the kitchen table with Mommy and Daddo while they discuss whether she needs a doctor. Mommy is still visibly shaken and keeps stressing how badly Bela fell and how frightened Deb and Carly were. When Daddo asks how Bela feels, Bela says she is okay, but the question overwhelms her and she begins to cry.
Daddo tries to calm Bela by lifting her onto his lap and framing the incident as an ordinary playground accident. To reassure her, Daddo tells Bela about a childhood injury in which Uncle Klay caused him to fall from the parallel bars and break a rib, explaining that his own mother was terrified then just as Mommy is now. Daddo's goal is to make Bela feel safe and convince her that she will recover.
Mommy resists Daddo's confidence and insists they do not actually know that Bela is fine. Because Mommy remains worried, Daddo agrees they should take Bela to Dr. Smith. The decision shifts the scene from anxious discussion to action as Bela's parents help her get ready and lead her toward the front door.
As Bela leaves the house with Mommy and Daddo, she hears creaking upstairs and understands it as a sign of Other Mommy's presence. Bela silently wonders whether saying yes to Other Mommy's demand to enter her heart would make the haunting stop or keep Other Mommy from coming closer. The chapter ends with Bela going to the doctor while the supernatural threat still hangs over the family.
