Chapter 68
Overview
Eve and Dom are struggling under severe financial pressure and the psychological toll of the death prediction. Dom has bought handcuffs to restrain himself at night, but his increasing stress, alcohol use, and sleepwalking are making things worse. Eve, inspired by her father's old trick of bribing a fortune teller, decides to track down the death lady and pay her to recant the prediction about Dom killing Eve.
Summary
Dom has purchased handcuffs—not for sex, but to restrain himself to the headboard at night so he cannot hurt Eve during sleep-related violence. Eve recognizes this as counterproductive: the stress, alcohol consumption, and disrupted sleep routine Dom has adopted are all factors that make parasomnia episodes more likely. She regrets showing him the video of Kayla Halfpenny's car accident, which essentially converted him into believing the death lady's predictions could come true. Although he denies full belief, the fear of killing Eve in his sleep has become lodged in his mind.
Eve observes that Dom's condition is worsening. He sleepwalks more than ever, wandering the apartment searching for an unnamed important object. Eve gently guides him back to bed each time, recognizing that what he's really searching for is a solution. He is never violent during these episodes, only agitated, but the situation is deteriorating.
Their financial circumstances are dire. They forgot to pay their car insurance, and after their car was damaged, they couldn't afford to make it roadworthy. They owe Dom's father money for the car, are paying down credit card debt, and struggle to cover rent each month. Both have taken on extra work—Eve waitresses three nights a week on top of her medical center job, while Dom does personal training, laboring, and night road work. They eat two-minute noodles, have canceled streaming services, and avoid all social activities that cost money. They haven't told anyone about their financial struggles out of embarrassment.
Alone in the kitchen while Dom practices with the handcuffs, Eve reflects on her parents' failed marriage. She remembers her mother mentioning being happy with Eve's father early in their marriage, which disturbs Eve because it implies even loving couples can fall apart. She also recalls her father bribing a tarot card reader to tell her mother he was the man of her dreams. This gives Eve an idea: she will find the death lady and pay her to tell Dom she got the prediction wrong—that he won't kill Eve and they'll live happily ever after. She just has to find her.
