Chapter 90
Overview
Allegra enjoys a hopeful coastal walk with Jonny but panics when he invites her to meet his family, hurting him with her evasive response. The outing unravels when her colleague Anders rushes to the scene fearing her social media post signals suicidal intent, and in the resulting commotion Allegra re-injures her back. Facing weeks of pain and recovery, and sensing she's damaged things with Jonny beyond repair, Allegra feels her depression closing in again—putting her squarely in the danger zone of the prediction she's been trying to outrun.
Summary
Allegra and Jonny are on a coastal walk between Dover Heights and Watsons Bay on a Wednesday morning. Allegra is enjoying the walk, feeling physically well with no back pain, and experiencing moments of genuine happiness with Jonny. She posts a captionless photo of the horizon on social media. As they walk, they discuss how each got into aviation—Allegra recalls being enchanted by a flight attendant as a child, while Jonny shares how his brother's offhand question at dinner redirected him from accounting to becoming a pilot. When Jonny asks Allegra what job she'd choose if she could do anything, she instinctively says "Pilot," then quickly dismisses it, insisting she misspoke and is happy as a flight attendant.
They pass through The Gap, a notorious suicide location, and Allegra points it out with dark humor. Jonny is alarmed, worried about the connection to her death prediction, but Allegra reassures him. They discuss how the airline investigation went—the captain backed Allegra up, and the incident was dismissed. Allegra reflects on how her family is handling her prediction: her mother is seeking blessings and consulting a famous Indian astrologer, her father encourages her treadmill running, and her brother Taj copes through inappropriate jokes. Her parents are increasingly worried as more of the Death Lady's predictions have come true.
Jonny then nervously invites Allegra to his parents' fortieth wedding anniversary party. Allegra panics internally, seeing the invitation as a terrifying escalation of commitment. She gives a noncommittal, evasive response, clearly hurting and embarrassing Jonny. She immediately realizes she's already deeply invested in the relationship and has made a mistake, but before she can fix things, her colleague Anders appears running frantically down the hill toward her.
Anders had seen her captionless horizon photo geotagged at the suicide location and, unable to reach her silent phone, rushed over fearing she was about to harm herself. In the chaos of Anders arriving, a woman with a dog passing on the path, and Allegra trying to navigate between them, she trips over her own feet and falls on her backpack. She immediately feels devastating pain—her chronic back injury has returned. She envisions weeks of pain, medication, constipation, and immobility ahead. Meanwhile, Anders notices Jonny in a suggestive way, but Jonny is cold and stiff, clearly still hurt by Allegra's rejection of his invitation. Allegra feels she has lost Jonny and sees "mustard-colored walls closing in"—a metaphor for her depression returning alongside the physical setback.
