Chapter 116
Overview
Ethan narrowly survives a violent confrontation with a drunk and aggressive Carter, who accuses him of sleeping with Jasmine and charges at him with a clenched fist. A seagull and a bird patrol dog intervene at the last second, thwarting Carter's attack. Ethan escapes with Faith and Lila, profoundly grateful to be alive, and finds himself holding Faith's hand as they run along the harbor.
Summary
Ethan is at a bar with two women, Faith and Lila, when Carter approaches them, visibly drunk. Carter places his drinks on Ethan's table and greets him with a fist bump, initially seeming amicable. He insists on being introduced to the women and kisses each of their hands in a faux-courtly manner, making them uncomfortable. Ethan and the women try to leave, claiming they have a booking elsewhere.
Carter then asks Ethan if he's heard from Jasmine since she left the country, noting that she has blocked him. Ethan mentions he's feeding Jasmine's fish as her flatmate, which triggers Carter's anger. Carter accuses Ethan of having slept with Jasmine and grows loud and aggressive, drawing attention from surrounding tables. Ethan thinks about the stealth knife in his pocket but is unsure when or whether to use it. The two women stand and try to de-escalate the situation by leaving.
Carter makes increasingly vulgar accusations, claiming Ethan slept with his girlfriend and making crude gestures. Ethan is consumed by rage but allows Faith to pull him away. As they walk toward Circular Quay, Ethan senses Carter charging at him from behind with a clenched fist. Time seems to slow as Ethan braces for impact, fearing he could die from a single punch—exactly the kind of death predicted for him.
At the critical moment, a seagull flies directly at Carter's face, and a bird patrol dog bounds forward, causing Carter to stagger back. Faith calls out thanks to "Harvey" (presumably the dog or handler), and the three of them run away along the moonlit harbor. Ethan is alive, overwhelmed with gratitude, and realizes Faith is holding his hand.
