Chapter 100
Overview
Leo's boss Lilith tells him he'll be kept off-site once he turns forty-three due to coworkers' fear of his predicted workplace death, effectively punishing him for the prediction. Meanwhile, Neve has presented an elaborate plan to move the family to Tasmania so Leo can leave his job and become a stay-at-home dad. Encouraged by his rekindled friendship with Rod and disillusioned with work, Leo appears on the verge of a life-changing decision.
Summary
Leo meets with his boss Lilith to discuss his approaching forty-third birthday—the age at which Cherry predicted he would die in a workplace accident. Since the YouTuber's death confirmed another of Cherry's predictions, Leo's coworkers have become increasingly uneasy around him, treating him as though he is cursed. Lilith tells Leo she plans to keep him off-site once he turns forty-three, citing the discomfort among staff. She frames it as "flexibility" but makes clear his performance metrics will be adjusted, implying longer hours to compensate.
Leo reflects on his wife Neve's ambitious plan to relocate the family to Tasmania, where Neve would apply for a job with the Tasmanian Department of Education and Leo would become a stay-at-home dad for a year. Neve delivered an elaborate presentation to the family complete with music, special effects, photos of rental homes, schools, beaches, and even a slide of Leo's mother looking "sad and hopeful" to leverage emotional blackmail. The children didn't commit but didn't refuse either, and Leo suspects his mother may have offered bribes. Leo told Neve he would think about it, but she urged him to decide quickly, playing the country song "Take This Job and Shove It" on repeat.
Leo also recalls a recent conversation with his old friend Rod, whom he reconnected with through Ethan. Rod dismissed the prediction as nonsense but encouraged Leo to recognize how worn down his job has made him, saying he never regretted his own decision to move interstate. Rod suggested they do the Bay of Fires walk in Tasmania together with their sons, an idea that fills Leo with happiness. As the meeting with Lilith concludes, Leo holds up a finger and says he has one more thing to say, hinting at a major decision.
