Chapter 94
Overview
Ethan survives his first month past the predicted death age and meets Leo for a drink, where Leo identifies the mysterious woman's brooch as the Kronecker delta symbol from mathematics, though its significance remains unclear. Meanwhile, Jasmine flees to Paris to escape Carter's increasingly stalkerish behavior, leaving Ethan alone to care for her expensive fish tank—and to endure Carter's aggressive door-pounding that same night.
Summary
Ethan has turned thirty and survived one month past his predicted age of death. He notes that most people around him have moved on from the death predictions, though his anxious plane friend Leo still checks in regularly every four or five days. When Ethan texts Leo that he has only eleven months left to prove the psychic wrong, Leo unexpectedly suggests they meet for a drink.
They meet at the Robin Hood Hotel, where Leo tells Ethan about reconnecting with an old estranged friend. Leo then reveals the real reason he brought it up: he believes he's identified the brooch the woman on the plane was wearing. He describes the symbol, and Ethan immediately recognizes it as the Kronecker delta symbol from mathematics and computer science. Leo explains the connection to his own name—Leopold—recalling how a university friend once jokingly called him "Leopold the Mathematical Genius" after learning about Leopold Kronecker's work. They speculate about why the woman would wear the symbol, noting it's used for simplifying complicated expressions across many fields, but they reach no firm conclusion. Leo abruptly leaves when his boss calls.
Ethan returns to Jasmine's apartment to find it dark and empty. He sits in front of Jasmine's extravagant new fish tank—an aquascape inspired by a scuba trip to Mozambique that cost more than a house deposit. He then receives a text from Jasmine, who is at the airport. She tells him Carter has become too stalkerish, so she's fleeing to stay with her brother in Paris for a few months, planning to spend Christmas in Europe. She asks Ethan to feed the fish. Ethan feels genuine flatmate annoyance for the first time but agrees politely. He imagines Harvey mocking the situation—being stuck feeding a fish heiress's fish while she's in Paris.
Shortly after, Carter arrives and pounds on the apartment door, shouting for Jasmine and demanding she talk to him, insisting she owes him. Ethan is furious, blaming Carter for Jasmine's departure and the fish responsibility. Rather than confront Carter or call the police, Ethan puts in his AirPods, turns his music up dangerously loud, and waits for the neighbor to call the police instead.
