Ethan Chang and his flatmate Jasmine, whom he describes as a "gorgeous frozen-fish heiress," ride an Uber through Sydney's Rocks district on a Saturday morning to visit a psychic named Luca. Ethan is infatuated with Jasmine but carefully hides his feelings, reminding himself this outing is not a date. During the ride, he reflects on his grief over Harvey, a friend who recently died and whose funeral he attended. Harvey's voice still pops into Ethan's head with derisive comments, and Ethan struggles with the unexpected depth of his grief for someone he didn't think about this much when alive.

Jasmine had been the one to suggest visiting a psychic after Ethan told her about the prediction he received on the plane—that he would die at age thirty in a fight, with his thirtieth birthday coming in October. Jasmine discovered that a Mystics, Witches, and Oracles festival in Hobart ended the day of the flight, which she believes explains the woman's presence. She proposed getting a "second opinion" from Luca, her regular medium and tarot card reader. Ethan agreed, partly because it meant spending time with Jasmine. He booked under a fake name to prevent the psychic from researching him, and Jasmine jokingly gave the name "Jason Bourne" at the shop.

They arrive at a dimly lit mystical gift shop run by Althea, who has an injured meniscus. Jasmine sends Ethan in first while she calls a surgeon to help Althea. Ethan descends to a small white room where Luca, a bald man in a U2 T-shirt, conducts tarot readings. Despite Ethan's intention to remain guarded, he quickly finds himself sharing information—his broken wrist from rock climbing, his single status, and his star sign. Luca reads the cards and tells Ethan that love is coming into his life by September or October, though it could be with the person he likes, someone else, or a friend of hers.

When the Death card appears, Ethan asks directly about the plane prediction. Luca is amused by the concept of a "psychic on a plane" and tells Ethan he doesn't believe anything is preordained—the moment someone hears a prediction, they change their behavior and are no longer the same person. He says he can only show possible paths. Luca then asks about a recently deceased loved one, and Ethan reluctantly acknowledges Harvey. Luca describes Harvey's distinctive laugh with accuracy that moves Ethan, whose voice breaks as he recalls Harvey's silent, wheezy laugh.

Luca claims Harvey is present and delivering messages. At first the messages seem generic—"have faith"—and Ethan is skeptical. But then Luca says Harvey's words: "Guys like us always wait too long to make the first move," which startles Ethan because it resonates with Harvey's personality and their dynamic. Luca finishes by relaying that Harvey says he'll enjoy watching Ethan "crash and burn" but adds, with a grin, "maybe you won't, Jason Bourne, maybe you won't"—using the fake name in a way that feels both playful and knowing.
