Chapter 25
Overview
Leo arrives at the Sydney taxi stand and reflects on work pressure and his parting with kind seatmates Max and Sue. A young man with a sling—Ethan, dubbed 'Cool Guy'—reveals the woman predicted he'd die in a fight at thirty, and Leo reassures him not to take it seriously. Leo observes the prediction woman looking completely ordinary outside the plane, her earlier menace fading, and impulsively offers to share a taxi with the young man.
Summary
Leo waits in a long taxi line at the Sydney domestic terminal after his delayed flight from Hobart. He learns via text that his son found The Lion King boring and that his sister Bridie forgot a line. His boss has been pressuring him with texts and emails about a tightening deadline, using passive-aggressive remarks about his mother's health and his 'long weekend.'
Leo reflects on his parting with seatmates Max and Sue at the escalators. Max reminded him to wear a hard hat (referencing the death prediction), and Sue warmly reassured him that taking his mother to a specialist was the right choice and told him not to regret his life away. Leo found Sue more motherly than his own mother. He learned they need to bake an elaborate Bluey birthday cake for their grandson's party the next morning, and he worries about their tight timeline alongside his own work deadline.
While in line, a young man with a sling—whom Leo recognizes from both the outbound and return flights—approaches him. Leo mentally dubs him 'Cool Guy,' noting his stylish glasses, full head of hair, and tired appearance. The young man asks Leo about the woman from the flight. He reveals she told him he would die in a fight at age thirty. Leo tells him not to worry, sharing that she predicted his early death too, and advises him to put it out of his mind.
Leo observes the prediction woman at the back of the taxi line, noting how innocuous she looks outside the claustrophobic airplane setting. He recalls that after the incident on the plane, she fell into a deep sleep so heavy that even landing didn't wake her. Her window-seat neighbor slipped past her without waking her, and other passengers gave her curious looks but no one spoke to her. Leo also tries to remember the symbol on her brooch, which had seemed strangely relevant to him, but he can no longer visualize it clearly. As Leo reaches the front of the taxi line, he impulsively looks back to offer Cool Guy a shared ride.
