Three months after the flight, on a peaceful Saturday afternoon in early July, Leo is chopping vegetables for a curry at home while debating whether to sneak in some weekend work. His wife Neve carries in laundry, their son Oli finishes his shower after a soccer game, and the dog sleeps. The calm is shattered when their daughter Bridie lets out a bloodcurdling scream from the living room.

Leo nearly chops off his thumb in shock, drops the knife, and sprints toward the sound. Neve leaps over the laundry basket and races alongside him. Oli, by contrast, leisurely wraps his towel and admires his biceps in the mirror, only mildly curious. They find Bridie cocooned in a blanket on the couch, clutching her phone—the device that has become a constant source of parental frustration despite all their attempts at screen-time controls.
