Chapter 52
Overview
Eve grapples with post-wedding blues and a mounting financial crisis, while reflecting on Dom's lifelong sleepwalking disorder and its newly frightening implications after the plane psychic predicted Eve would die by intimate partner homicide. Dom's research into "homicidal sleepwalking" has left him haunted, and the chapter ends with Dom revealing he's crashed their car and may have let the insurance lapse, deepening their troubles.
Summary
Eve discovers a large credit card bill and retreats to bed, overwhelmed. She reflects on her relationship with Dom—how they met in a Year 10 French class and bonded over being only children raised by single parents, both with pets named Tilly. She recognizes she's experiencing post-wedding blues: the wedding consumed eighteen months of planning and excitement, and now that it's over, she feels an emptiness and lack of purpose, compounded by their financial situation.
Eve's thoughts turn to Dom's lifelong sleepwalking and sleep-talking, which began at age six when his mother abandoned him and his father. Over the years, Dom has walked outside barefoot as a child, driven a car while asleep as a teenager, and regularly talks nonsensically in his sleep. Eve hides their car keys each night as a precaution. She recalls a camping trip in the Huon Valley when Dom stood over her bunk and said "I will kill you"—terrifying her momentarily before she realized he was quoting Liam Neeson's famous lines from the movie Taken, which they'd all been quoting that evening. The incident was laughed off at the time.
However, after the woman on the plane predicted Eve would die by intimate partner homicide, Dom connected the camping incident to a real phenomenon called "homicidal sleepwalking" and became deeply worried he might hurt Eve in his sleep. He researched cases of people who killed loved ones while sleepwalking. Eve reassured him, insisting he's never hurt her and that she doesn't believe in psychics, though she privately acknowledges he has sometimes roughly pushed her hand away during episodes. Dom continues to be troubled—recently talking in his sleep, declaring he would "never hurt Eve."
Eve tries to focus on their financial crisis, but when Dom comes home early after two clients canceled, he reveals he bought expensive Thai food, crashed their car, and may have forgotten to pay the car insurance—compounding their already dire financial situation.
