Chapter 28
Overview
Cherry wakes from a complete blackout after the flight lands, with no memory of anything that occurred since seeing an advertisement in the seat pocket—including whatever she did that frightened the passengers. Flight attendant Allegra, visibly shaken and smelling of vomit, treats Cherry as though she had a medical episode, but Cherry insists she simply fell asleep. Cherry also realizes that the young woman in her wedding dress simply bought it from a charity shop in Hobart, solving one of the mysteries that had unsettled her.
Summary
Cherry narrates waking up on the plane after what she describes as a blackout, with no memory of the delay on the tarmac, the flight taking off, being offered food and drink, standing up, or what she did during the flight. She compares the experience to a general anesthetic—time simply vanished. She has a pounding headache, dry mouth, and extreme hunger, and initially fears the plane has crashed before realizing it has landed normally.
Cherry is shocked to find the plane nearly empty, with only the last few passengers disembarking. She notices a little boy with a camouflage backpack staring back at her fearfully as he is led off the plane by a flight attendant; the boy grabs the attendant's hand and turns away when Cherry tries to smile at him. Cherry tells the flight attendant Allegra that she must have fallen asleep, but Allegra treats her as though she has had a medical episode, asking if anyone is meeting her and if she needs medical assistance. Cherry insists she is in excellent health and takes no medication.
Cherry observes that Allegra looks disordered, unkempt, and unwell, and detects the smell of vomit coming from her. Cherry addresses Allegra by name (reading her badge) and asks if she is all right. Allegra makes a visible decision, forces a stunning smile, and says she is fine. Cherry exits the plane and walks to the taxi stand, noticing the injured boy ahead of her in line and reflecting that he does not actually resemble Henry from the Hornsby Picture Theatre as she had earlier thought, wondering if she is developing face blindness.
As Cherry gets into a cab, she sees the young woman wearing what she recognizes as her own old wedding dress and realizes the simple explanation: she had donated the dress to a charity shop in Hobart and the woman had purchased it there. Cherry notes that she did not have a good evening.
