Chapter 114
Overview
Matt discovers Paula has been compulsively writing "Timmy will not drown" every day since April, raising concerns about her OCD relapsing. Paula meets former colleague Stephanie for drinks and shares the story of the flight predictions. Eve texts that the predictor is Cherry Lockwood, a former actuary—and Stephanie reveals she personally knows Cherry through her late parents.
Summary
Paula is getting ready for drinks with Stephanie, a former work colleague, when her husband Matt discovers a large pile of handwritten pages in her desk drawer. Each page is filled with the repeated phrase "Timmy will not drown," written compulsively every day since the flight in April—it is now November. Matt gently suggests this might be a compulsion, referencing Paula's previously disclosed OCD diagnosis. Paula deflects, insisting it's under control, and promises they'll discuss it when she returns.
Paula recalls how she told Matt about her OCD early in their relationship, and how he was respectful but they haven't discussed it in years. The sheer volume of pages—dated daily for months—reveals how deeply the prediction has affected her mental health, consuming hours of her time each night.
At drinks, Paula meets Stephanie, whose parents died around a year ago. Paula feels guilty for not having checked in on Stephanie sooner, realizing she has become self-absorbed. She ends up telling Stephanie everything about the flight prediction and its aftermath. While they talk, Paula receives a text from Eve revealing that the woman from the flight is named Cherry Lockwood and that she used to be an actuary.
Stephanie reacts with shock—she knows Cherry Lockwood personally. Cherry and her husband were best friends with Stephanie's parents. This unexpected connection promises new insight into who Cherry is and why she made the predictions on the flight.
