Chapter 80
Overview
Eve and Paula meet outside a Hobart cathedral before the funeral of the elderly doctors whose deaths Cherry predicted. They discover they share a desperate need to find Cherry—Eve to bribe her into recanting the "intimate partner homicide" prediction, and Paula to address her obsessive fear of Timmy drowning. They agree to join forces in tracking Cherry down, but Eve receives a troubling text from Dom about sleepwalking violence, adding urgency to their search.
Summary
Eve arrives at a cathedral in Hobart for the funeral of the elderly doctors whose deaths Cherry predicted on the flight. She is wearing her mother's black funeral dress. Before entering, a woman named Paula approaches her, recognizing Eve as the bride from the Hobart-to-Sydney flight. Paula introduces herself as the mother with the screaming baby and reveals that Cherry also gave her a prediction—that her baby Timmy would drown at age seven.
The two women bond over their shared predicament. Eve explains her plan to find Cherry and bribe her with a hundred dollars to give a different prediction, inspired by her father once bribing a tarot card reader. Paula questions whether this would work, especially given that Cherry has now correctly predicted three deaths. Eve insists Cherry is a fraud, pointing out the absurdity of the "intimate partner homicide" prediction given that Dom would never hurt her. Paula initially asks probing questions about whether Dom might be violent, which angers Eve—she explains that the real problem is Dom himself, who has become consumed with fear that he might kill her in his sleep, since he is a sleepwalker. Dom has been reading about sleepwalking murders and wants to take drastic measures like sleeping in the bathroom.
Paula, in turn, confesses her own obsessive response: she has enrolled Timmy in three separate swim schools, feeling calm only when he is swimming. Eve reassures her that if Timmy enjoys it, there's nothing wrong with that. The two women recognize a kinship in their struggles and agree to join forces to track Cherry down. Paula notes she thought she recognized Cherry from somewhere but cannot place her, associating the memory with a feeling of sadness mixed with joy.
As they talk, Eve receives a text from Dom containing an article headlined "Woman Kills Beloved Parrot in Her Sleep" along with the message "We need to talk." Eve feels urgency—the ominous tone of Dom's message reinforces her need to find Cherry quickly, and she tells Paula they must find her fast.
