Chapter 35
Overview
Paula attends her sister Lisa's wedding, struggling to suppress her anxiety about the plane psychic's prediction that her son Timmy will drown at age seven. Despite her resolve to keep the prediction secret, champagne loosens her tongue at the reception, and the story spreads—reaching Matt secondhand, which causes a brief argument. The chapter reveals Paula's family is aware of her tendency toward anxiety, and a flashback to a teenage knife-holding memory underscores the family's pragmatic, unfazed dynamic in the face of alarming situations.
Summary
Chapter 35 takes place at the wedding of Paula's younger sister, Lisa. Paula watches her daughter Willow serve as the flower girl, walking slowly and deliberately down the aisle while scattering rose petals. Matt holds their son Timmy, dressed in a miniature shirt and bow tie. Paula is overcome with emotion watching her sister approach the altar, but intrusive thoughts creep in—she imagines Willow's future wedding and wonders if there will be a toast for "the bride's little brother who so sadly, tragically drowned." The prediction from the plane haunts her, and she recalls the sorrow on the mysterious woman's face.
Paula has told no one about the death prediction for Timmy, not even Matt, who arrived just the night before. She is determined to keep it secret so as not to cast a shadow over her sister's wedding. She also knows her family would worry not about the prediction itself but about Paula's anxious reaction to it, as she is expected to monitor her stress levels carefully.
At the reception, after speeches and toasts, Paula chats with a cousin of the groom who consults a clairvoyant for life decisions. Loosened by champagne, Paula shares the story of what happened on the plane. The conversation spreads quickly around the table, and Matt learns about the prediction secondhand when a drunken bridesmaid expresses sympathy about Timmy. Matt is justifiably annoyed that Paula told strangers before him. They argue briefly, with Matt questioning why she engaged with the woman at all, while Paula points out she was trapped in her seat.
Matt quickly recovers and says they shouldn't "make a thing of it," which irritates Paula because she feels he means she specifically shouldn't overreact. Paula's father then approaches, having heard the news, asking about "this nonsense" regarding Timmy. This triggers a memory from Paula's teenage years: at seventeen, she held a sharp kitchen knife to her father's neck while spaghetti sauce simmered, with her family calmly encouraging her. The scene is revealed to be a wholesome family memory—likely a trust exercise or a cooking lesson—highlighting the family's casual, pragmatic dynamic.
