Chapter 106
Overview
Eve finally identifies the Death Lady by combining two online tips—that the woman might be an actuary and that her first name is Cherry—leading her to discover Cherry Lockwood's professional identity. Meanwhile, Eve and Dom continue to struggle with financial stress and Dom's refusal to sleep when Eve is present, underscoring the ongoing toll of his predicted fate on their marriage.
Summary
Eve prepares to leave for her shift at a pizza and pasta restaurant, reminding Dom it's Thursday. Dom is so exhausted from starting work at five in the morning that he doesn't even know what day it is. Eve kisses his forehead and reassures him that their financial difficulties will improve, but Dom falls asleep before she even leaves the apartment. Eve reflects that Dom only seems to let himself sleep properly when he's alone, calling the situation 'so, so stupid'—a reference to his fear of harming her in his sleep.
On the bus to work, Eve checks online discussions about the Death Lady. She finds a new post from someone suggesting the woman could be an insurance actuary, based on the language she used during the flight—information relayed by the poster's daughter who was a passenger. Eve also recalls that Paula had recently sent her a message saying the Death Lady's first name might be Cherry.
With this combined information, Eve searches 'Cherry Actuary' and immediately finds a match. A photo shows a younger but unmistakable Cherry Lockwood at a podium, wearing a silk blouse, pencil skirt, pearl earrings, and red lipstick, delivering a keynote address at the Actuaries Institute December Luncheon five years ago. Eve notes that Cherry looked happy in the photo—nothing like the 'Death Lady' persona the public has attached to her.
