Chapter 48
Overview
Miriam's death cures vampirism across the sixth floor, but it immediately triggers a world quest to destroy fifty Odious Creepers before nightfall or face disastrous consequences. Mordecai and Katia make clear that the rewards are bait and that the creatures are strong enough to turn the event into a slaughter for both crawlers and hunters.
At the same time, Carl and Donut wake Prepotente, hoping to manage him before nearby monsters arrive, only to find him consumed by grief. Prepotente's decision to swallow the Divine Suffering ring and collapse over Miriam's ashes shows that, although he has been restored, he is in no condition to be stable or safe.
Summary
After Miriam turns to dust at sunrise, Carl quietly removes the Divine Suffering ring from himself and debates with Donut about what to do with Prepotente once he wakes. Miriam had emptied her inventory before dying so her items would not vanish, and Carl promises most of it will go to Prepotente, though he secretly pockets two Size Up potions. As he does, a new number, 50, appears on the interface and is immediately followed by a floor-wide world quest.
The system announces that Miriam's death has cured vampirism across the floor, but it has also left behind a far worse problem. Big Tina's slaughter and undead-building efforts have produced fifty Odious Creepers and thousands of Shambling Berserkers, and all crawlers and hunters must kill every Creeper before sunset. The rewards are enormous, but the warning is clear: if even one survives until dark, catastrophic consequences will follow for everyone on the floor.
Mordecai identifies the creatures as plant-driven abominations that have taken over uncontrolled undead fragments, and he urgently warns Carl and Donut not to get close. He explains that the Creepers will likely control surrounding vines, tear bodies apart for parts, and become even more dangerous at night, making the quest feel less like an opportunity than a massacre. Carl adds Katia to the conversation, learns her estimate that some of the monsters may be around level 150 or higher, and tells allies to work only with people they trust. Donut separately warns Katia away from Tserendolgor, while Mordecai keeps repeating that the whole event is a deadly trap.
When Donut spots approaching mongo creatures on the map, Carl decides they must wake Prepotente immediately. Carl kneels beside the grieving goat, realizes how completely Prepotente has been broken by watching Miriam die, and speaks to him with unusual empathy. Carl asks Prepotente to stay calm and not kill the incoming monsters because Carl and Donut need to handle them, and then Donut uses her spell to wake him.
Prepotente revives in silence, removes the Divine Suffering ring, and for a moment Carl thinks he might be able to reclaim it. Instead, Prepotente picks the ring back up and swallows it whole. He then collapses before Miriam's ashes as fresh rain begins washing them away, and he releases a raw, nearly voiceless scream of grief. He finally manages to speak, mourning that Miriam promised to sing and play piano for him again, and Donut gently comforts him while Kiwi and the other monsters edge into the clearing without attacking.
Still sobbing and barely aware of the danger around him, Prepotente stares at the empty ground where Miriam had been. In the middle of his grief, he suddenly notices that his sponsor has sent him an emergency benefactor box. The chapter ends with the floor facing a lethal new world quest and with Prepotente restored, but emotionally shattered and dangerously unpredictable.
